wows.

First wow:  the size of our new television. That’s right.  We got a new TV.  So . . . we were watching TV this past week, and I noticed that we couldn’t see half of the names of the actors on Lost.  So I asked Caleb why, and he said , “Oh, because the networks just assume eveverybody has an HD TV now.”  We’ve been joking about the size of our TV for a while now (and also the ugly entertainment center that held it), but it wasn’t until I saw that we were actually missing stuff on screen that I thought seriously about it.  And once the wife gives even a half a second of serious consideration to buying a new TV, well, it’s all over. ;)  So, we are now the proud owners of a 46″ Samsung LCD TV and a really pretty (and much more appropriate for our house)  TV stand.  We haven’t gotten a chance to switch our dish to HD yet (we’re holding off until after our vacation for that), but already, it’s amazing.  It took us a couple of hours to get everything set-up and put together last night, so we didn’t start watching Survivor until after 10, but it was totally worth it!  With the open floor plan, the multi-level deck, and the TV, we now have the best house for entertaining.

Second wow: I ran 5 miles today.  That wasn’t really the plan.  I drove to downtown Winterville to run around because I am sick of running the hills in my neighborhood (downtown Winterville is totally flat) and because that’s where my 10K in June will be.  So, I ran the 3 miles I had planned and started stretching out after, and realized that 1) I wasn’t very tired after the run, 2) it was the absolute perfect temperature and delightfully windy, and 3) I wasn’t finished listening to my podcast, so I thought, what the heck, let’s run some more.  I knew that running the same 3-mile loop might be a little much, seeing as the most I’ve ever run is 4 miles, so I went with 2-mile loop and it wasn’t a problem at all.  Part of me even wanted to run another 2 miles, but I didn’t want to push it . . . anyways, all of this is to say that training for an 8K in November (I basically ran 8K today)  now seems kinda silly and anti-climactic.  And if I can keep up what I did today, I think I could easily do several 3-mile stints in a row, with a short break in between.  So, we’ll play it by ear, but I may just sign up for the Richmond Half-Marathon.  I definitely wouldn’t run the whole thing– maybe run 3 miles, walk a half mile– something like that.  But that just seems like a more sensible goal . . .

  1. Yeah, downtown Winterville is incredibly flat. I’ll probably run into you there sometime if I haven’t already (backwards Yankees cap, beard, boyishly handsome despite the years). But the loooong hill on Lakeview Drive is part of the final stretch of the 10K course. It’s a real assblaster, too. Lakeview connects Main Street to Robert Hardeman Road. You’ll hit it from the Robert Hardeman side on race day…just under a mile and 2/3 of if is gradually uphill. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s just off Main Street. The first right-hand turn past the Robert Hardeman/Main Steet junction.
